There are so many “to do”s out there that I thought there should be an alternative what not to do to show the reasons for the “to do”. Sometimes it’s hard to understand why something is so important until you see what can happen when you don’t have or do it. So, here’s a step by step approach of how to fully mess up your shower or tub surround:
- Assume that all walls are square perfectly, color really doesn’t matter, and you can “figure” it out later.
- Don’t worry about proper shelving in your bathroom. You can just hold the shampoo for thirty minutes while you shower or accidentally step on it and watch it squish down the drain. Oh, well.
- You don’t need a soap dish. You can hold the soap while you bathe and if you fall and trip on it, the concussion will cure itself. No big deal.
- Don’t stress about the details. Plain walls are just fine. You can throw up any color grout.
- Don’t worry about the trims. An exposed cut edge is just fine. No one will notice.
- Laying the tile out dry to line up the tile properly on all sides is for pansies. You don’t need to bother with that crap.
- Waterproof smaterproof! If it leaks, that’s what homeowner’s insurance is for (not). Just tell your kid downstairs to get a bucket and stop whining.
- You don’t need to worry about proper drain placement or doing a sloping floor in the shower. If the water runs all over the floor, get some of those super absorbent towels and put down. It’s no big deal. Water doesn’t rot wood that fast.
Although I hope you got a good laugh out of this, actually a messed up shower or tub surround is serious and is no laughing matter. You can do tremendous damage and waste hundreds if not thousands of dollars as well as damaging your floors and walls. Learn all you can, take the time and do your homework. It’s well worth the investment. Spending a little extra time now may give years of enjoyment later.
